Ohio House GOP Caucus Wants Tax Cuts & Protections from Left Wing Ballot Attacks

In the aftermath of the Ohio House’s speakership vote, the majority GOP caucus designated Rep. Derek Merrin as leader – leading to the GOP caucus releasing its own set of issue priorities for this session.

Despite this difference, the House Republicans agree taxpayers should come first, with both proposing significant flat income tax reform.

The Merrin-led GOP caucus announced its support for a 2.5% flat income tax and eventual income tax elimination.

There is plenty of overlap on several key issues. Merrin’s priority list was led by a proposal to establish a 60%-of-the-popular-vote threshold for constitutional amendments that are placed on the ballot for voter approval.

“The number one issue right now is protecting our constitution from liberal interests that look to hijack our constitution,” Merrin said. “We can pass whatever bill we want in the House, in the Senate. But if we’re going to allow our constitution to be hijacked, it completely ruins all the work that the people’s representatives have done.”

Income tax elimination and a higher threshold for ballot amendments to pass were also joined by school choice expansion, and other policies, including:

  • Supporting our local governments
  • Restoring confidence in state government through ethics reform
  • Fighting for family values
  • Providing affordable, reliable energy for Ohio businesses and families
  • Preserving our freedoms
  • Improving healthcare and lowering costs for all Ohioans
  • Strengthening our workforce and welfare reform
