Ohio Elections: Republicans Keep Control in Columbus, Trump Takes the State

Ohio Republicans kept their roll from the past few cycles going on Election Day 2020, maintaining solid control of the state legislature, and defending congressional seats. Voters handed victories to incumbents and the parties retained their House seats.

In key Supreme Court elections, the party’s split wins. Incumbent Justice Sharon Kennedy won in one race, as did challenger Jennifer Brunner in another. This shifts the balance of the court to the left, but still with a Republican majority.

In the State Legislature, every open seat was filled by a Republican, and most incumbents carried their district quite handily. Republicans saw new Senators elected in districts 4, 6, 18, 22, and 26 to replace retiring members. The same trend held true in the House as well, though district 60 is too close to call, “Democrat Daniel Troy is leading by 785 votes over Republican George Phillips.”

Taxpayer Protection Pledge signer Rodney Creech gained an open seat in district 43, and fellow pledge signers Niraj Antani and Mark Romanchuk are moving chambers winning seats in the 6th and 22nd Senate districts, respectively. Incumbent pledge signers Susan Manchester, Thomas Brinkman, Bill Dean, Diane Grendell, and Bill Roemer will all retain their House seats, and their voters have a written commitment from them to refuse any and all tax increases.
